Marcel Breuer
Today’s article is dedicated to the architect and furniture designer, who is considered as one of the major modernists. The work of this man of Jewish roots is renown for its simplicity, but with an unusual design. You do not know Marcel Breuer? Never mind! His life and work is introduced in the following article.
Marcel Lajos Breuer was born on May 21, 1902, in Hungary, but worked most of his life in Germany and later in the USA. He studied at the Staatliches (state) Bauhaus in Weimar and after a short stay in Paris (in 1925), he took over the management of the Bauhaus carpenter’s workshop, which at that time resided in Dessau. He was heavily influenced by constructivism and the De Stijl group.
Because of Jewish roots, Lajko, as his colleagues would call him, found it hard to establish himself as a well-known designer. After the Nazis came to power, he moved to Switzerland in the 1930s and then to London. Interestingly, he even taught at Harvard University. As a designer, he also designed several homes near Boston and in 1946 he established an office in New York.
